Walter Mondale - Running for President of the United States - 1984
Walter Frederick Mondale was born in Ceylon, Minnesota, the son of Theodore Sigvaard Mondale, a Methodist Episcopal Church minister, and his wife Claribel Hope Cowan, who was an elementary school teacher. According to Mondale’s biographer Finlay Lewis, he was given the nickname Fritz because of a perceived childhood resemblance to Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany.
Mondale spent his boyhood in the small towns of southern Minnesota, including Heron Lake and Elmore, the latter of which he claimed as his hometown for the purposes of his campaign biography during the 1980 presidential campaign. He attended public schools. His half-brother Lester Mondale was a Unitarian minister.
